I don’t know why this old coaching saw sticks in my craw, but I hate it.
Ready? Here goes…
“How you do anything is how you do everything.”
WHAT? Talk about a disempowering phrase. Especially in the coaching world where they’re trying to help you be the best version of you.
So let me get this straight…
I make sure my horses have access to food 24/7 because it’s better for the way their digestive systems are built.
They get their hooves trimmed and new shoes every two months.
I spend social time and groom them regularly.
And let’s not talk about my carrot budget. I buy them in bulk to keep my ponies happy.
Yet one day maybe I didn’t latch the gate well enough and they escaped to the neighbor’s pasture. (This didn’t happen quite like that but the result was the same. Loose horses who don’t come to their names like a dog.)
Am I supposed to be defined by that moment? Bullsh*t.
Here’s another example…
A cricket somehow worked his way into my empty bathtub and it couldn’t get out. I tried to catch it but I couldn’t. So I decided to give it some water, and I threw some dead insects in the tub.
After two days, I started thinking of it as kind of a new addition to the family.
While giving it some fresh insects, Elsa kitty took notice. She jumped in the tub and smashed it with her paw.
Okay, now in this case, how she does something is how she does everything. She’s a cat. She operates on instinct.
Humans are more complicated than that. We’re defined by patterns and choices over time, not one isolated incident. Your past does not define your future.
So let’s erase that stupid phrase from existence, k?
End of rant.
Keep it rodeo,
